Simply Yoga offers a range of regular classes and courses in the Iyengar Method for students of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to experienced life-long students. Classes usually have no more than 8 to 10 students.
Your yoga experience will be more beneficial if you choose the most suitable class, rather than the most convenient time. While the practice of yoga is for everyone, not every class or course might be appropriate for you.
If you are working with a health condition, physical injury, or have limited mobility in any part of your body, please feel free to reach out and discuss this with us before joining a class. The following descriptions of each of the levels can be used only as a general guideline.
Courses
Beginner Courses
Whether you’re simply looking to try out yoga for a few weeks, or ready to commit to a lifelong practice, our Beginner Course is designed to give you a safe and skillful introduction to authentic yoga practice.
10-Week Beginner Course
Each 75-min class systematically introduces you to the basic principles of alignment in Iyengar Yoga. Learn how to get in and out of the basic standing and seated poses safely.
Perfect for new students, complete beginners, or anyone who hasn’t practiced in the Iyengar style before.
Develop skill, strength, stamina, and flexibility gradually, and at your own pace.
Careful instruction suitable for those new to yoga, with step-by-step demonstration of all poses and techniques to ensure safety and understanding.
Format: One new lesson, with new skills and poses, is introduced every week, and key skills practiced and repeated, so you have multiple opportunities to consolidate what you have learned.
The 10-week structure supports your commitment to building a steady routine for your yoga practice. Students who successfully complete the 10 weeks progress faster and most often continue to be disciplined and regular in their practice going forward.

Regular Classes
Foundations / Level One
Our Level One Foundations classes are a great place to establish a regular practice. Suitable for anyone new to Iyengar Yoga, progressing beginners who have completed a Beginner Course, or anyone who wishes to spend a little more time building strength and consolidating their skills at this level (less than 12 months regular practice experience overall). Lessons focus on developing the basic poses introduced in the 10-week Beginner Course further and introducing new asana to build a solid foundation of skill and strength before progressing toward the Intermediate classes. This is where you will also practice and become confident in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), a prerequisite for attending Intermediate classes. These classes are also a good re-entry point after a long break from regular practice. Anyone is welcome – there is always something new to learn!
Mixed / Levels One & Two
These open, or general practice classes are offered on weeknights to accommodate progressing beginners as well as more experienced students. Instruction is first given for the more basic versions of the asana before more advanced instructions are offered for those students who wish to extend themselves further. Lessons are built on the foundational standing and inverted poses and progress toward more complex poses and variations.
Intermediate / Level 2
Our Intermediate classes are best suited to dedicated students who practice regularly and are familiar with the foundational sequences in Iyengar Yoga. These classes provide a deeper and expanded study of the standing and seated poses, an introduction to head balancing, shoulder stand variations, unsupported backbends, and pranayama. Suitable for students with at least 12 months regular practice experience and who are confident in setting up and practicing Sarvangasana (shoulder stand).
Advanced Intermediate/Led practice
This class is faster paced and physically more demanding and therefore best recommended for students with upward of 2 years of regular Iyengar yoga practice, and who are comfortable and confident in the practice of inversions (including Sirsasana and Sarvangasana); arm balances; and unsupported backbends (or their appropriate alternatives), as well as pranayama. Students often practice alongside their teacher, perhaps exploring an inquiry into a particular group of asana or special focus area. This class demands a higher level of independence: a thorough knowledge of Level 1 and 2 asana, the safe and correct use of props, and the awareness and ability to make personal modifications when required. Sequences are often focused on exploring and refining more challenging asana and yogic concepts.
Gentle Class
A Mixed-Level class for those wanting a slower, gentler, more supportive practice with the option to use props, such as the yoga chair and wall ropes. Various modifications make poses more accessible to those with minor injuries, general pain and stiffness or restricted movement in certain joints. In these lessons asana are sequenced from passive to active which specifically benefits those who are feeling low in energy, suffering from heat, or lacking in physical strength. Classes are focused and structured to support common complaints such as knee, upper and lower back pain, headaches, fatigue, menopausal symptoms, depression, insomnia, asthma, general ageing and osteoporosis.
Restorative/Emotional Stability Class for Experienced students
These classes are suitable for Iyengar Yoga students with at least 12 months experience and who have started learning how to use Iyengar Yoga props. The focus of this class is deep relaxation of the body through a slow progression of supported postures which are held for longer periods while remaining present with the breath. Supported inversions and chest opening asana are included to rejuvenate the body, deepen the breath and quiet the mind. Various Pranayama (breath practices) are taught and practiced to restore energy and vitality. Last Saturday of the month at 4pm.
Private Sessions
The advantage of having a private session is generally not well understood. Occasionally in every student’s practice they will come up against a challenge, either physical or mental, that needs more time than a teacher can devote in a class situation. The advantage of a private sessions is that it can help students overcome fears, injuries, and physical restrictions.
After an initial consultation your teacher will design your ‘personal practice’ During the class you will be guided through your personal sequence until familiar, and then that sequence is practiced for a minimum of 5 weeks for best results. At subsequent visits your teacher will monitor & adjust your practice with progress. This could be in an addition to your general class attendance. Personal attention and assistance.
Some students also enjoy regular private sessions instead of group classes.
